Press Release Summary: I sent him a check for start up funds, and I never heard from the guy again. How the heck did that happen?
Press Release Body: I was looking to get into stocks because my savings rate of 1.2% just wasn't cutting it when you include inflation in there. I met a guy at a bar in the Cheesecake Factory (restaurant) and asked him if he knew anything about stocks. I only asked because this gentleman was dressed in a suit and seemed successful. To my surprise he said he owned an investment company that often deals with stocks. He gave me a business card with a nice picture, a phone number and website on it. It looked legit to me.
I went on the website which was wssrinvestmentcorp.com. I'm sure it's decommissioned now after many complaints. This phony website promised me all sorts of great % returns and I finally decided to go for it and I mailed to guy a $5,000.00 check to start up with. 2 Weeks later I called back to see which stocks he invested in and how I was doing so far. The number didn't exist. I emailed him a bunch of times with no response. I called my bank to cancel the check but it was already cashed and probably well spent. I totally freaked out and called the police.
They instructed me that I should have known better and that they would pass the word along of this scam artist. There was no way I could get my money back and the business card contact information was all cleverly fake.
The best advice that I can give you is don't do what I did! Now I am definitely a little scared of sending checks to brokers. I finally did it though and my money is safe with Charles Schwab. Also I found this review blog that helped me quite a bit with my stock trading so I can get back the $5,000.00 that I lost!
